Unit Aim

This unit covers the knowledge required to understand duty of care and own role in this. A duty of care is of significant importance and the learner must understand how to address dilemmas that arise about the duty of care and its implications.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria 

Learning Outcomes: To achieve this unit, the learner will:  Assessment Criteria: Assessment of these outcomes demonstrates the learner can: 
1. Understand the implications of duty of care. 

1.1 Define the term ‘duty of care’.

1.2 Describe how duty of care relates to duty of candour.

1.3 Describe how the duty of care affects own work role. 

2. Understand support available for addressing dilemmas that may arise about duty of care. 

2.1 Describe dilemmas that may arise between the duty of care and an individual’s rights.

2.2 Explain where to get additional support and advice about how to resolve such dilemmas. 

3. Know how to respond to complaints. 

3.1 Describe the process to follow when responding to complaints.

3.2 Identify the main points of agreed procedures for handling complaints. 

Assessment Guidance 

This unit must be assessed in line with the relevant assessment principles.

Candour – being open and honest with individual/s and being open and honest within organisations in reporting adverse incidents or near misses that may have led to harm.

Individual refers to someone requiring care or support; it will usually mean the person or people supported by the learner.
